Man Utd Win Transfer Race as Young Striker Agrees Move After ‘Agreement in Place’ Breakthrough

Manchester United have reached an agreement to send Ethan Wheatley out on loan, with Championship newcomers Lincoln City winning the race for the young striker.

The move comes at a time when the centre-forward position remains one of the areas Manchester United still need to improve.

Michael Carrick has Benjamin Sesko available, while Joshua Zirkzee remains another option, but the club are still expected to consider adding more experience before the transfer window closes.

For Wheatley, however, the immediate priority is regular first-team football.

The 20-year-old has struggled to make a real impact during previous loan spells, and another season spent mostly watching from the bench would not help his development.

Lincoln can now offer him a fresh opportunity in the Championship.

Wheatley’s situation has been interesting throughout the summer.

Fabrizio Romano previously revealed that Everton were considering making a formal approach for the striker, which came as something of a surprise given his limited record in senior football.

The forward has had loan spells with Walsall, Northampton Town and Bradford City, but his goalscoring numbers have not yet suggested that he is ready to compete regularly at Premier League level.

Across those three spells, Wheatley made 40 appearances and scored only three goals.

His most recent experience at Bradford was particularly difficult. He played 11 times without finding the net, making it clear that another loan move was needed if United still wanted to see whether he could develop into a first-team player.

Everton’s interest therefore never looked like the obvious next step. Instead, Lincoln have moved quickly and won the race for his signature.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke reported that Wheatley had agreed to join Lincoln after several clubs showed interest. Ben Jacobs later confirmed that the agreement is for a season-long loan, rather than a permanent transfer.

That is important for Manchester United. The club have not given up on the striker yet, and a successful Championship campaign could completely change the conversation around his future.

Lincoln have secured Wheatley after competition from several clubs.

The move gives the young striker a chance to play at a higher level than he has experienced during his previous loans.

He now has a full season to prove that he can score goals, compete physically and become a reliable senior striker. Manchester United will be watching closely.

The club are not short of attacking options, but their striker department still has questions hanging over it. Sesko is the major signing, while Zirkzee’s future is less certain and Cunha has also been used in attacking areas rather than as a natural number nine.

The Lincoln move does not mean Wheatley’s Manchester United career is finished. In fact, this could be his biggest opportunity yet.

He will return to Old Trafford next summer with another full season of senior football behind him. By then, he will be 21 years and six months old, meaning United will have a much clearer idea of whether he can eventually compete for a place in Carrick’s squad.

The problem is that his previous numbers have not been strong enough.

Three goals from 40 appearances is not the record of a striker who is currently ready for Premier League football. But judging a young forward only on goals can also be too simple.

Wheatley has been moved between different levels and teams during his development, and consistency of playing time has been difficult to find.

Lincoln can now change that.

If he can score regularly in the Championship, improve his movement and become stronger against experienced defenders, United may have a very different player returning next summer.

If the same problems continue, the club may eventually decide that a permanent departure is the better option.

Carrick needs more from Man Utd’s attack

The timing of Wheatley’s loan is also interesting because United’s attack has not been convincing enough.

The club have invested heavily in Benjamin Sesko, but the Slovenian has not always been guaranteed a starting place since Carrick took charge.

Joshua Zirkzee has also struggled for regular minutes, while Matheus Cunha has been asked to fill different attacking roles. United therefore remain interested in bringing in another experienced striker if the right opportunity becomes available.

Wheatley is not currently at that level. That is why another loan makes more sense than keeping him around as a fringe player.

The Championship will provide a much better test of his ability to lead the line regularly, and United will be able to judge him over an entire season rather than isolated appearances.

For now, Lincoln have won the race. Everton’s surprise interest has not resulted in a transfer, and Wheatley will instead head to a Championship club determined to give him an important role.

The pressure is now on the youngster.
