Why United left The Cliff

By the late 1990s Alex Ferguson felt The Cliff could not meet Premier League demands. He also disliked the lack of privacy, with journalists present daily and opposition scouts able to watch sessions. Construction at Carrington began in 1999.

What is on site

The main building holds a large gym, a 25-metre swimming pool, hydrotherapy and rehabilitation areas and seven team changing rooms. The Academy facility has a full-size indoor pitch and a heated, floodlit outdoor pitch built to the specification of the Old Trafford surface. A medical and sports science wing opened in 2013.

The 2025 upgrade

On 8 August 2025 the club inaugurated the enhanced centre. The £50 million project, started under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, took 12 months and improved the medical, sports science and academy facilities.
