DONE DEAL: Man Utd Land £70M Midfield Powerhouse as Romano Confirms Medical and Five-Year Contract

by Alex Matthews

Manchester United have completed their fourth signing of the summer, with Carlos Baleba joining the club from Brighton in a deal worth up to £70 million.

The transfer comes just hours after Michael Carrick’s side suffered a frustrating start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, losing 2-0 away to newly promoted Hull City.

United had hoped to begin the new campaign with a positive result, but the performance at the MKM Stadium highlighted several problems that still need to be solved.

The arrival of Baleba will at least give Carrick another powerful option in the middle of the pitch.

The Cameroon international has been on United’s radar for around a year. The club first made contact last summer, but Brighton’s asking price proved too high at the time. A year later, circumstances have changed.

Brighton were reportedly looking for around £100m previously, but Baleba’s less impressive 2025/26 campaign saw his valuation fall. United have now agreed a package worth £65m guaranteed plus £5m in potential add-ons.

The midfielder has completed his medical, while contracts between the two clubs have been signed.

Carlos Baleba gives Michael Carrick another midfield option

Baleba’s arrival should add plenty of energy and physical strength to Carrick’s midfield.

The 22-year-old has already built up considerable Premier League experience with Brighton and made 31 appearances during the 2025/26 campaign.

He is not, however, being brought in as a player who will immediately solve every problem in United’s midfield. His biggest strengths are defensive rather than creative, and that was clear from his numbers last season.

Baleba did not score or assist in the Premier League, while he created only one big chance throughout the campaign.

That means United supporters should not expect him to suddenly become the main source of creativity.

Instead, his job will be to help win possession, provide physical power and give the more attacking players freedom to move forward. That could become particularly important for Carrick after the Hull defeat.

United struggled to create enough against the newly promoted side, and former United striker Wayne Rooney pointed towards that problem when discussing the game on Match of the Day.

The defeat showed that United still need more creativity, even with Baleba arriving.

United have finally got their man

There is an interesting story behind Baleba’s arrival. United wanted him last summer, but Brighton valued their midfielder at a much higher price.

The Seagulls were understood to be looking for a fee around £100m, making a transfer extremely difficult.

United did not give up completely, though. Personal terms were reportedly agreed with Baleba during that earlier period, meaning the player’s side was never considered the major obstacle.

The difficult part was reaching an agreement with Brighton. Now, 12 months later, United have managed to do exactly that.

The final package is significantly lower than the price Brighton wanted previously, although £70m still represents a huge investment.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the completion of the move, explaining that Baleba had passed his medical and that the contracts had been signed. The midfielder has therefore become the latest major addition to Carrick’s squad.

His contract will run for five years, with United holding an option to extend it by another year. Brighton have also negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

For Baleba, this represents the biggest move of his young career.

At just 22, he now has the chance to establish himself at one of England’s biggest clubs and become an important part of United’s midfield for years to come.

Baleba will not fix United’s attacking problems

This is where United need to be realistic. Signing Baleba is a positive move, but it does not solve the issue that was exposed against Hull.

United lacked creativity in their opening game and struggled to produce enough clear opportunities.

Baleba’s statistics show that he is unlikely to be the player who suddenly changes that. He managed only nine chances created in the Premier League last season and produced one big chance.

He also failed to score or provide an assist. Those numbers are not necessarily a concern because creating chances is not his primary job.

United are signing him for his ability to influence the game in other areas.

His 86.1% passing accuracy shows that he can help his team retain possession, while his physical qualities should allow him to compete against some of the Premier League’s strongest midfielders.

Carrick can therefore use him as a platform for the more creative players around him. The manager will need those players to improve, though.

What comes next for Manchester United?

The Baleba deal is significant, but United’s summer business is not necessarily finished. Carrick still needs more options in other areas, particularly after the disappointing performance against Hull.

The club has already invested heavily in midfield, with Baleba joining the likes of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos as major additions.

The challenge now is making sure those signings work together.

Baleba’s arrival should give United more athleticism and defensive security, but the team still needs to become more dangerous in the final third.

The Hull defeat was a reminder that spending money does not automatically solve tactical problems.

For now, though, United can celebrate finally completing a transfer they have been working on for more than a year.

Carlos Baleba is officially a Manchester United player, and Carrick now has a powerful new midfield option as he looks to respond to a difficult opening-day defeat.
