“I Didn’t Like It” Thomas Tuchel Sends Fresh Warning To Man Utd Star After England Snub

by Alex Matthews

Thomas Tuchel has given Harry Maguire another reason to worry about his England future after admitting that the Manchester United defender’s reaction to his World Cup omission has not helped his chances of returning to the national team.

Maguire was one of the biggest names left out of England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. The decision came after a season in which the experienced centre-back had rebuilt his position at Manchester United and believed he had done enough to earn another chance with the Three Lions.

The 33-year-old did not hide his disappointment when Tuchel informed him that he would not be travelling to the tournament.

Maguire publicly described himself as shocked and gutted by the decision, while his mother, Zoe, also reacted strongly on social media. The situation created plenty of discussion around the England camp, particularly because Maguire had been a regular part of the national team for many years and has 66 international caps to his name.

At the time, Tuchel said he was surprised by the public reaction. The German manager had explained that Maguire had been given an opportunity to express his feelings privately, but the England boss ultimately decided to stay with the group of central defenders who had been trusted during the months before the tournament.

Now, several months later, it appears that the incident has not simply disappeared.

Tuchel admits Maguire situation still matters

Maguire was once again absent when Tuchel announced his latest England squad for the new international campaign.

The omission comes despite some defensive problems for the Three Lions, with players such as John Stones and Dan Burn unavailable because of injury. Instead of bringing Maguire back into the group, Tuchel selected Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite among his defensive options.

When questioned about Maguire’s public response to his World Cup omission, Tuchel gave a very direct answer.

The England boss admitted that the situation “does not help” Maguire’s chances.

Tuchel also made it clear that he is not planning to hold the incident against the defender forever. He explained that he can move on from situations quickly, but also admitted that he did not like what happened.

Most importantly, Tuchel revealed that he has not spoken to Maguire since the World Cup selection fallout.

That is a significant development because it shows that the issue was not simply forgotten once the tournament ended. Tuchel has moved forward with his England plans, while Maguire remains outside the picture.

This does not necessarily mean that Maguire can never play for England again. Tuchel himself suggested that he is not the type of person to hold a grudge for the rest of someone’s life.

However, the latest comments show that the public nature of the disagreement has not worked in Maguire’s favour.

Maguire now has a big England mountain to climb

The situation is particularly interesting because Maguire’s international career had already become less certain before the World Cup.

He had missed a number of England fixtures as Tuchel increasingly trusted other defenders, with Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa and John Stones often ahead of him in the manager’s plans.

Maguire’s last England appearance came during the March international break, only a few months before the World Cup. Despite his long international record, Tuchel eventually decided that other centre-backs offered the balance he wanted for the tournament.

Tuchel has previously explained that squad selection is not simply about putting the most talented individual players together. Before the World Cup, he spoke about the importance of trust, chemistry, leadership and the overall balance of the group. England’s official website also reported that the manager wanted a squad where every player understood his role and contributed to the team environment.

That makes the Maguire situation even more interesting.

The defender can still perform well for Manchester United and put himself into consideration through his club football. But international selection is ultimately in Tuchel’s hands, and the manager has now openly acknowledged that he did not appreciate how Maguire’s World Cup disappointment played out publicly.

At the same time, Tuchel has shown that he is willing to bring previously overlooked players back into his plans.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has returned to the England squad after a long absence, while Cole Palmer has also been recalled after missing the World Cup. Young players including Rio Ngumoha and Alex Scott have also been brought into the senior setup.

That means the door is not necessarily permanently closed for players who have previously missed out.

For Maguire, however, the challenge is now about more than simply playing well.

He will need to continue performing for Manchester United while waiting for another opportunity from Tuchel. And after the England manager’s latest comments, it is clear that the events surrounding the World Cup omission remain part of the story.

For now, Maguire’s England comeback looks like a difficult road, with Tuchel continuing to build his defence around other options as the Three Lions begin their new Nations League campaign.
