Fabrizio Romano Drops Encouraging Man Utd Update as Late Deadline-Day Signing Remains Possible

Manchester United could still make a late move in the transfer market before the summer window closes, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that the club remains open to signing a new left-back.

Manchester United’s interest in strengthening the left-back position has been known for some time, but the club has not yet found a deal that makes sense financially.

Romano explained that United have been exploring different options and remain prepared to act if the right player becomes available before the window closes.

One of the players discussed by the club has been Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde. United held discussions with his representative Jorge Mendes around two weeks ago as they looked into whether a transfer could be possible.

However, the numbers involved quickly became a problem.

The potential cost of the Balde deal was viewed as too high, meaning United did not decide to move forward with the player. This shows that while the club want to improve the position, they are not simply going to spend money on any available left-back.

Romano’s update suggests that the situation could change if another opportunity appears on deadline day.

United therefore remain in the market, but a signing is far from certain. The club will need to find a player who fits their requirements and is also available at a price they are prepared to pay.

That could make the final hours of the transfer window very interesting for United supporters.

Lewis Hall Remains an Expensive Option

One name that has continued to be connected with Manchester United is Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall.

Hall has emerged as one of the most talked-about options for United during the summer, but a deal would not be easy to complete.

Recent reports have suggested that Newcastle would want more than £75 million before seriously considering selling the England international. That asking price creates another major problem for United.

Newcastle would also have very little time to find a replacement if Hall was allowed to leave on deadline day. Because of that, the Magpies are not expected to be keen on allowing the defender to depart at this late stage.

For Manchester United, the situation means they may have to look elsewhere if they want to add a left-back before the deadline.

The club could decide that the available options are not good enough and keep their current squad until January. However, Romano’s comments show that United are still watching the market and could react if an unexpected opportunity arrives.

Manchester United 2026/27 Transfer Business

United’s summer business has therefore been heavily focused on midfield. Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have all arrived to give the team more options in that area, while Karl Darlow has joined from Leeds United on a free transfer.

At the same time, several players have left the club, including Hojlund, Vitek and Collyer on permanent deals, while Bayindir has moved to Celta Vigo on loan.

The departures of Casemiro, Malacia and Sancho have also helped clear space in the squad.

The biggest issue for Manchester United now is not only finding the right left-back, but doing so before there is no time left to complete the paperwork.

Deadline day deals can move extremely quickly, but they can also collapse because of negotiations, medicals or registration issues. United will need to be certain about their target before committing to a late deal.

Romano’s comments suggest the club is keeping their options open rather than actively pushing towards one guaranteed signing.

That is an important difference.

United supporters should therefore not assume that a new left-back will definitely arrive. The club appears willing to make a move, but only if they find the right profile and the financial conditions are acceptable.

Lewis Hall looks difficult because of Newcastle’s reported valuation and their lack of time to replace him. Balde has already proved too expensive after United explored the possibility of a deal.

This leaves the Red Devils needing to find another solution if they are serious about strengthening the position. For now, the door remains open.
