Man Utd Complete Late Transfer Move as Medical Scheduled Today After Deadline

Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to send young striker Chido Obi out on loan to Dutch side Willem II, giving the highly-rated forward a chance to play regular first-team football away from Old Trafford.

The move comes only hours after the Premier League transfer window closed, with United still able to complete the deal because the Dutch market remains open. The teenager is expected to spend the rest of the season in the Netherlands, with the move designed to help him gain valuable senior experience.

Obi has found it difficult to secure regular minutes with Michael Carrick’s first team, despite being regarded as one of the more exciting young attacking players at the club. A temporary move now looks like the sensible next step for his development.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the agreement with Willem II is in place, with the player expected to complete his medical before the Dutch window closes.

There is also no expected option for Willem II to make the transfer permanent, meaning United will retain control of the striker’s future.

The main reason behind the loan is simple. Obi needs competitive football.

The young striker has already shown his ability at youth level, but moving into senior football is a completely different challenge. Training with Manchester United’s first team can help his development, but regular matches are what will allow him to understand the physical and tactical demands of professional football.

At United, opportunities have been limited.

With Carrick having several options ahead of him, Obi has struggled to get the amount of playing time he needs. Rather than allowing the youngster to spend another season watching from the sidelines, United appear ready to send him somewhere where he can play much more often.

Willem II could provide that opportunity.

Lewis Hall had been one of the main targets, but Newcastle United made it clear that they did not want to sell the England international after a difficult summer at St James’ Park.

United also considered several other possibilities.

Alejandro Balde, David Raum and Ian Maatsen were among the names linked with the club, while there was even a late attempt to explore a deal for Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

City were reportedly prepared to allow Ait-Nouri to leave, but United were not willing to agree to the conditions attached to the deal. That meant Carrick’s side were forced to continue with the defensive options already available.

This has caused concern because United’s squad does not have natural cover in every defensive position.

Former United defender Gary Neville had already raised concerns about the situation, particularly after seeing the team struggle for natural full-back options during the match against Ipswich.

Neville pointed out that when Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw came off, United had to use players in positions that were not ideal. Leny Yoro was used at right-back, while Noussair Mazraoui moved to left-back.

If Obi can use his spell with Willem II to score goals, improve his physical game and show that he can handle senior football, he could return to Manchester in a much stronger position.
