Manchester United are pushing hard in the transfer market as they look to secure two major midfield signings this summer.
New head coach Michael Carrick has already made his plans clear, and the club is now working on deals for both Sandro Tonali and Ederson.
The Red Devils are aiming to rebuild their midfield after an inconsistent season, and the summer window is seen as a key moment in the club’s new project.
Tonali becomes top priority for Carrick
One of the biggest stories right now is United’s strong interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Reports from Italy claim Carrick personally wants Tonali as his first major signing at Old Trafford. The Italian midfielder is seen as a key target because of his experience in the Premier League and his strong tactical awareness.
Tonali only joined Newcastle in a big-money move, but his future is now being discussed again.
It is understood there was an informal agreement in place that could allow a transfer if Newcastle fails to reach the Champions League, although any deal would still require a huge fee.
Some reports suggest his valuation could be around €100 million, while other figures mention a package closer to €75–80 million plus bonuses.
United believes Tonali would bring control, discipline, and leadership to their midfield, something the squad has lacked in big matches.

Ederson deal moving closer in parallel
While Tonali is now a major focus, Manchester United is also very advanced in its pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
The Brazilian has already agreed personal terms with the club in principle, and talks between the two clubs are continuing. Atalanta is preparing for a possible sale, with a fee around €50 million being discussed.
Ederson is seen as a more dynamic, box-to-box option who can carry the ball, break lines, and add energy to the midfield. United believes he would complement other midfield profiles in the squad.
Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino has also hinted that something is happening behind the scenes, suggesting that a transfer is very much alive.
Double-signing strategy taking shape
What makes this situation interesting is that Manchester United is not treating these as either/or deals. Instead, the club is actively exploring the possibility of signing both players in the same window.
The idea is to completely rebuild the midfield with different profiles:
- Sandro Tonali is the deep, controlling midfielder
- Ederson is the powerful, all-action runner
This would give Carrick a more balanced and flexible midfield system going into next season.
Club sources believe this kind of double signing could immediately raise the level of the squad and close the gap on their rivals.
Big summer ahead at Old Trafford
With Carrick now officially in charge, Manchester United’s transfer strategy is becoming clearer. The club is expected to sign at least two midfielders, plus reinforcements at left-back and left wing.
Both Tonali and Ederson are now firmly on the list, and negotiations are progressing step by step.
If United manages to land both players, it would be one of their biggest midfield rebuilds in years and a strong statement of intent for the new era at Old Trafford.
