The Carrick Man Utd future question has come under renewed scrutiny, with Sky Sports reporting that the club will accelerate its search for possible replacements after the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth. Sky describes Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as the expected frontrunners if Carrick leaves.
The report is conditional. It describes expectations within the club and possible successors, rather than an announced dismissal or an agreed appointment.
Carrick Man Utd future: what Sky reports
In an 18:11 Sunday update, Sky Sports correspondent Rob Dorsett says United were considering alternatives before the Bournemouth game. He reports that the hierarchy will now speed up that process, with club insiders expecting Carrick to be relieved of his duties.
Sky says director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada would make a recommendation to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The Carrick Man Utd future reporting adds a new stage to the uncertainty covered in our earlier report on Carrick staying for Bournemouth. Back then, BBC Sport said he was carrying on as normal before the match.

Howe and Nagelsmann lead the reported options
Sky’s Dorsett and Dan Khan name Howe and Nagelsmann as the leading candidates should a vacancy arise. The outlet reports that both could start quickly without compensation being required, and says Howe would be interested in talks if the role became available.
On the Carrick Man Utd future front, Sky says Howe has previously been recommended to United, while Nagelsmann has a working connection with head of recruitment Christopher Vivell from RB Leipzig. The same report says United have also considered Unai Emery and Antonio Conte, but the pair are not among the current favourites. It reports that Emery remains committed to Aston Villa.
Carrick Man Utd future: Guardian reports crisis talks
In a later report published at 19:24 GMT on Sunday and updated at 19:26, the Guardian’s Jamie Jackson says United’s hierarchy are holding talks over whether to dismiss Carrick. The newspaper reports that Howe remains Wilcox’s preferred candidate if a change is made. That is a reported preference, not an appointment or a confirmed approach.
The Guardian quotes Carrick saying he was “carrying on as normal” and was “not expecting anything either way”. Addressing his applause for supporters after the match, he said: “It wasn’t a farewell from me.” The newspaper also quotes Maguire saying the squad were “fully behind” the head coach.
Carrick Man Utd future is still a reported process
The Bournemouth loss extended United’s winless run to eight matches. Bruno Fernandes remained on the bench throughout. His difficult week included the debate over Carrick’s position after Como.
Before Sunday’s match, Carrick had defended aspects of United’s pressing and running figures. The Sky and Guardian reports on the Carrick Man Utd future concern the club’s next decision, but their expectation of a possible departure is not confirmation that one has happened. Nor does being a reported frontrunner mean anyone has offered either candidate the job or that either has accepted.
Sources: Rob Dorsett and Dan Khan, Sky Sports, and Jamie Jackson, the Guardian, 25 October 2026. The report describes expectations and possible candidates; no dismissal, offer or appointment has been announced.
