Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth: Fernandes unused in defeat

by Alex Matthews

Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth brought another damaging afternoon for Michael Carrick as Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes remained an unused substitute throughout the Premier League defeat, with Harry Maguire captaining United.

The completed TNT Sports commentary and Independent match coverage confirm the result. It followed the midweek defeat by Como and left United without a win in eight matches in all competitions, according to BBC Sport.

Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth: two goals before the break

Bournemouth took control late in the first half. Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute before Tavernier doubled the advantage five minutes later, leaving United two goals down at the interval.

Carrick had spoken before the match about the need to uphold the club’s standards. Our report on his pre-match comments set out that challenge, but the response on the pitch did not deliver the result United needed.

Matheus Cunha came on at half-time. Lisandro Martinez followed during the second half, while Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey were also introduced as United tried to change the game.

Evanilson puts the result beyond United

Instead of a United recovery, the third goal came from Bournemouth. Evanilson beat the advancing Senne Lammens and finished from a tight angle in the 71st minute, completing the scoring.

United still had late moments. Djordje Petrovic saved a Mason Mount effort in stoppage time. Neither produced a goal to reduce the deficit.

The outcome also sharpened the contrast with Carrick’s defence of United’s work without the ball. His argument before kick-off was that running statistics alone do not explain performances; this afternoon’s scoreline leaves a wider problem to address.

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reports that Carrick called Fernandes’ omission a “football decision” before the match. Mount and Youri Tielemans were given playmaking responsibilities, but Fernandes did not enter the game even with United trailing.

That is the confirmed selection outcome. It does not by itself establish a disciplinary sanction or a change of captaincy beyond this fixture. Our earlier captaincy report covers the discussion before the team was named.

The Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth defeat increases scrutiny of Carrick, but speculation about his future is not an announcement that he has left. The confirmed story at full-time is a three-goal home loss and an unanswered need for a response.
