Manchester United supporters do not need to worry about Kobbie Mainoo being left out of the club’s Premier League plans despite his name not appearing on the latest 23-man squad list.
United submitted their Premier League squad following the closing of the summer transfer window on Tuesday, with the club required to provide an updated list of senior players.
The final list contains 23 names, but there are a couple of notable players missing from it. Mainoo and young defender Leny Yoro are both absent, which could have caused some confusion among supporters.
However, there is no major problem surrounding either player.
Both Mainoo and Yoro remain eligible to play Premier League football because of their age. The pair fall under the Premier League’s Under-21 category, meaning they do not have to take one of the available senior squad places.
That is particularly important for Mainoo, who remains an important young player at Old Trafford and is expected to be available to manager Ruben Amorim whenever required.
Why Kobbie Mainoo is missing from the squad
United had to submit their updated Premier League squad after the summer transfer window closed.
Clubs have to follow squad registration rules, with a maximum number of senior players allowed to be included. However, those rules also contain special provisions for younger players.
Mainoo qualifies as an Under-21 player under the Premier League rules because he was born on or after January 1, 2005.
That means Manchester United were not required to include him in the 23-man senior squad. The same situation applies to Yoro.
The French defender is also classified as an Under-21 player and therefore does not need to take up one of the senior squad positions. Despite both players being absent from the submitted list, United can still select them for Premier League matches during the campaign.
This is an important detail because a quick look at the squad list could suggest that Mainoo or Yoro had somehow been left out of Amorim’s plans. That is not the case.
Mainoo can continue to feature for United in the Premier League, while Yoro is also available when selected.
The situation is simply linked to the way the league’s squad registration system works.

Manuel Ugarte included despite injury
One of the more interesting parts of United’s squad announcement is the inclusion of Manuel Ugarte.
The midfielder has been included in the 23-man senior list despite currently dealing with an injury that could keep him out until next year.
That decision shows that United have decided to keep Ugarte registered as one of their senior players rather than leave his place available for another option.
His absence could be a long one, but the club clearly still see him as an important member of the squad.
Unlike Mainoo and Yoro, Ugarte does not benefit from the Under-21 exemption, meaning his place has to be considered within the senior squad structure.
For United, this makes the squad situation slightly more interesting.
Mainoo does not need to be registered in the senior group because of his age, while Yoro is in the same position. Ugarte, meanwhile, occupies one of the senior places even though he may not be available for a considerable period.
There is also no reason for United to make any immediate changes to the list.
The club will have another chance to adjust their squad after the January transfer window closes. That could become important if United decide to make further additions or departures during the middle of the season.
For now, though, the message surrounding Mainoo is positive.
The midfielder has not been dropped from the Premier League squad, nor has United made him unavailable for league football. His name simply does not need to appear on the senior registration list because he meets the age requirements for an Under-21 player.
That should come as a relief to supporters who may have initially been concerned when they noticed his absence.
Mainoo remains available for selection, and United can continue to use him throughout the Premier League season.
The same applies to Yoro, who has also been left off the senior list because of his Under-21 status.
So while the 23-man squad announcement may have raised a few eyebrows, there is actually little reason for Manchester United fans to be concerned.
The club has followed the Premier League registration rules, while keeping their younger players available for first-team football.
Mainoo’s absence from the list is therefore more about squad administration than his position within the team.
If Amorim believes the academy graduate is the right option for a particular Premier League fixture, he remains free to select him.
For United, that is the most important part of the entire situation.
