‘Here We Go’: Fabrizio Romano Confirms Man Utd have Beaten Liverpool to 16-Year-Old Talent

Manchester United have completed a deal to sign Liverpool academy youngster Isaac Konde, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The 16-year-old is regarded as a promising young player and has now decided to continue his development at Old Trafford rather than remain with Liverpool.

Konde has not yet made his senior debut for Liverpool, but he had started to move closer to the Under-18 setup towards the end of last season. His decision to leave is another example of Manchester United looking to bring some of the best young talent from other Premier League academies into their own system.

United have made several moves of this kind during the summer, showing that their recruitment plans are not only focused on players who can immediately improve Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad.

David Eze and Karim Cassim both arrived from Manchester City, while Tynan Thompson joined from Tottenham Hotspur. Konde now becomes another young player added to that group.

The idea behind these deals is simple. Clubs can sometimes bring in talented academy players for relatively small fees, particularly when a youngster’s existing contract situation allows them to move on. If the player develops well, the value of the signing can increase massively over the following years.

Liverpool offered Konde a scholarship before United move

Although Konde is still only 16, there was already a feeling around Liverpool that he was a player worth keeping.

Liverpool academy expert Lewis Bower previously provided an insight into the youngster when reports first emerged linking him with United. Bower explained that Liverpool had offered Konde a scholarship, but the teenager has now chosen to take up the opportunity with Manchester United instead.

Konde made six league appearances for Liverpool’s Under-18 side last season. Those appearances came during the final part of the campaign, with the youngster being slowly introduced to a higher level.

He even finished the season with consecutive starts despite still being an Under-16 player, which shows that Liverpool were prepared to give him opportunities above his normal age group.

Liverpool’s forward options had also been affected by injuries, while Joshua Sonnie-Lambie had moved up to the Under-21s. That situation allowed Konde to show what he could do against older players.

Bower’s assessment suggests that there is plenty to like about the young forward, although there is also plenty of development still needed.

He has played from the left side and has also featured as a striker in a two-man attack. This means he is not simply a player who stays in one position, with his movement allowing him to find different areas of the pitch.

Bower described Konde as having excellent speed over longer distances as well as a very sharp burst when starting from a slower position. That ability can be especially useful for a young forward because it allows him to attack space and put defenders under pressure.

There are areas of his game that still need work. His decision-making can be inconsistent at times, while there are moments when he could do more to lift his head and assess the options around him.

However, those issues are normal for a player who is still so young.

United have another exciting academy project

One of the most positive parts of the assessment is Konde’s attitude.

Bower noted that the youngster did not allow mistakes or unsuccessful actions to affect his confidence. Instead, he continued to work hard and remained positive when things did not go according to plan.

That mentality could be just as important as his technical ability as he begins life at Manchester United.

Konde’s pace can create problems for defenders, but it can also create opportunities for his teammates because opponents have to respect the space he can attack.

His ability to drop towards the ball and create separation from his marker is another useful quality, while his willingness to play on the shoulder of the defence gives him another option when his team is looking to play forward quickly.

The move also underlines the changing nature of academy football.

Manchester United are not simply waiting for young players already inside their system to develop. They are also looking around the country for teenagers who have shown enough potential to justify an investment.

Liverpool will understandably be disappointed to lose Konde after giving him opportunities with the Under-18s and offering him a scholarship.

However, United will hope they have managed to identify another player who can grow into a senior footballer over the coming years.

There is no guarantee that a 16-year-old will eventually reach the first team, and Konde has a long road ahead of him. He will first need to establish himself at United, adapt to a new environment and continue improving his technical and tactical game.

But his performances for Liverpool’s academy were enough to attract attention, and the fact that United have now completed the deal shows they believe he has something worth developing.

For Manchester United supporters, the most exciting part will be watching whether Konde can turn his raw pace, versatility and positive mentality into a player capable of making the huge step from academy football to the senior team.

For now, however, this is another important piece of youth recruitment for United, while Liverpool have lost a prospect they would clearly have preferred to keep.
