Manchester United are finally closing in on a key summer signing, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson now expected to complete his move to Old Trafford in the coming weeks as Michael Carrick begins to reshape his squad.
The deal has been in progress for some time, but now things are moving fast, with reports suggesting personal terms are done, and a club-to-club agreement is already in place. The transfer fee is believed to be around £35m.
For United, this is seen as an important step after a season where the midfield needed more control and energy.
Ederson Set to Arrive as First Big Midfield Signing
Ederson is expected to be the first major midfield arrival this summer, with Manchester United planning more than one addition in that area.
The club is not stopping here. The idea is to rebuild the midfield properly, not just replace one player.
Big names like Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali have also been discussed internally, but their huge price tags could make deals very difficult.
For now, Ederson is the priority.
The Brazilian has built a strong reputation in Serie A for his work rate, passing ability, and defensive awareness. At 26, he is seen as a player ready to step straight into Premier League football.
Casemiro’s Exit Leaves Big Gap at United
One of the reasons United is acting quickly is the departure of Casemiro.
The experienced midfielder was a key figure in recent seasons and even managed a strong final campaign, scoring goals and providing leadership on the pitch.
However, replacing him is not simple.
Casemiro brought a mix of experience, defensive power, and game control that is hard to find. United now believes Ederson can help fill part of that gap.
Stat comparisons from last season show how closely Ederson matches Casemiro in key defensive and passing areas, especially in tackling, ball recovery, and passing accuracy.
While Casemiro was more aggressive in duels, Ederson offers more control on the ball, which fits the modern style Carrick wants to build.
United is Also Planning for the Future with Orozco
Alongside Ederson, Manchester United is also moving for younger talent.
Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco is expected to join the club once he turns 18 in July, after a pre-agreement was already completed last year.
He is viewed as a long-term project rather than an immediate starter.
Orozco has been described by scouts as a “destroyer” in midfield, someone who reads the game well and brings strong energy off the ball. Some even compare his playing style to a young Casemiro or Moises Caicedo.
His strength in duels and ability to break up play have impressed coaches at the youth level, especially during international tournaments where he stood out physically and tactically.
Carrick Building a New Midfield Identity
With Ederson arriving and Orozco joining later, it is clear Manchester United is building for both now and the future.
Carrick wants a midfield that can defend strongly, press aggressively, and still keep possession under control.
Ederson will likely be the immediate solution, while Orozco represents long-term planning.
For United fans, this summer marks the start of a new direction in midfield rebuild.
It may take time, but the club is clearly trying to fix one of its biggest weaknesses with a smarter and more balanced approach in the transfer market.
