Man Utd overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice late on before being sent off.
Bruno Fernandes started the comeback with a retaken penalty. Cunha then struck in the 83rd and 86th minutes to end United’s nine-match winless run in all competitions.
Roma punish United before the break
Matias Soule put the visitors ahead after United lost possession, finishing a move that exposed space in the home defence. Donyell Malen doubled Roma’s lead from the penalty spot after Ayden Heaven handled.
United reached half-time 2-0 down. Their position worsened early in the second half when Carlos Baleba went off injured, with Youri Tielemans replacing him.
Man Utd fight back through Fernandes
Cunha won the penalty that changed the match. Fernandes’ first attempt was saved by Devis Vasquez, but the kick was ordered to be taken again after Bryan Cristante encroached and cleared the rebound.
Fernandes converted the retake in the 58th minute. Bryan Mbeumo then came close to equalising when one shot struck both posts, as United pressed for a second goal.
Cunha completes the turnaround
The equaliser arrived in the 83rd minute. Cunha took advantage of Leonardo Balerdi’s poor clearance to finish from close range.
Three minutes later, substitute Shea Lacey found him inside the area. Cunha controlled the pass and drove a powerful finish past Vasquez at the near post to put United ahead for the first time.
Cunha’s night ended with a second yellow card in stoppage time after a challenge on Balerdi. Man Utd had to see out the closing moments with 10 players, but held on for their first win in 10 matches.
The result gave Michael Carrick a needed victory after a difficult run, which included the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth. It did not settle the wider questions around United’s form, but the comeback was a clear response to a first half in which Roma had been firmly in control.
