Man Utd Step Up Move for £69M Uruguayan as Carrick Plans Huge Upgrade on Left Side

by Alex Matthews

Manchester United is continuing to push hard in the transfer market as the club prepares for a huge summer rebuild ahead of next season.

After securing Champions League football, the Red Devils are now working on improving several areas of the squad, and a new left-sided player has quickly moved onto their radar.

Reports in Portugal claim United have now made contact over a possible move for Maxi Araujo, who has impressed for Sporting CP this season.

However, United are not alone in the race, with several major European clubs also showing interest in the Uruguay international.

Manchester United Looking for More Competition

United’s recruitment team believes the squad still needs more quality and depth despite recent improvements under Michael Carrick.

One area being looked at closely is the left side of defence and attack.

The club has struggled badly with injuries in recent years, especially involving Luke Shaw, while Tyrell Malacia has failed to establish himself properly since arriving at Old Trafford.

Malacia has barely featured this season, and there is now a strong belief he could leave the club when his contract expires.

Because of that situation, United wants another player capable of operating down the left side.

Why Maxi Araujo Is Attracting Attention

Maxi Araujo has enjoyed an impressive campaign in Portugal, and his performances have caught the attention of several top clubs across Europe.

The 26-year-old is known for his pace, energy, and attacking quality from wide areas.

Although naturally an attacking left-back or wing-back, he is also capable of playing further forward, something which makes him attractive to modern managers.

This season, he has contributed important goals and assists while helping Sporting compete strongly both domestically and in Europe.

United scouts are believed to have monitored him closely over recent months.

Premier League Rivals Also Interested

Manchester United may want the player, but the competition is becoming very serious.

Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Juventus are all reportedly tracking the Sporting defender.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are said to be pushing especially hard for his signature.

Reports suggest Atletico manager Diego Simeone personally wants the player as part of his squad rebuild.

That could make negotiations far more difficult for Manchester United.

Sporting Ready to Demand Big Money

Sporting CP is famous for developing players and selling them for huge fees.

United fans know that very well after the club signed Bruno Fernandes from Sporting back in 2020.

Since then, Sporting have continued producing and improving talented players before selling them to Europe’s biggest clubs.

Because of Araujo’s growing reputation, Sporting is expected to demand major money for the player.

His release clause reportedly stands at around £69million, although some reports suggest a deal could eventually happen for closer to £43million.

Either way, United know this would not be a cheap signing.

Carrick Wants More Energy in Wide Areas

Michael Carrick is believed to want quicker and more direct players throughout the squad.

United have improved in recent months, but there is still a feeling that the team lacks enough pace and intensity in certain positions.

Araujo’s ability to attack space, carry the ball forward, and support attacks fits the type of football Carrick wants to build at Old Trafford.

The manager also wants players capable of handling multiple roles during a long season.

That flexibility could make Araujo an even more attractive option.

Big Summer Expected at Old Trafford

This summer transfer window is shaping up to be one of the busiest United has faced in years.

Several players could leave while new arrivals are expected across different positions.

Midfield remains a priority, but United are also desperate to strengthen the defence and wide areas.

The club know they must improve again if they want to compete properly in the Premier League and Champions League next season.

A move for Maxi Araujo would show that the recruitment team is targeting players entering their best years rather than short-term solutions.

Manchester United are clearly planning aggressively for the future, and Maxi Araujo has now emerged as another serious transfer target.

The Sporting star has the qualities United are searching for, but the club will need to move quickly if they want to beat several rivals to his signature.

With the World Cup approaching and interest growing across Europe, this transfer story could develop very quickly over the coming weeks.
