“Legendary” Manager Willing To Cut Compensation Fee In Boost For Man Utd And Tottenham

Kieran McKenna is preparing to return to management and is open to discussions with both Manchester United and Tottenham, according to Football FanCast.

The 40-year-old has been away from the dugout since leaving Ipswich Town earlier this year, but his break from football does not appear to be a sign that he has lost interest in management.

Instead, McKenna is understood to be waiting for the right opportunity before making his return.

That could become interesting very soon, with both Manchester United and Tottenham currently facing questions around their managers.

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United have made a difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, while Roberto De Zerbi is also under pressure at Tottenham following another disappointing result.

The timing could be important because United and Spurs are due to meet when the Premier League returns after the international break.

Manchester United currently have just five points from their opening five league games, while Tottenham have collected only two points from the same number of matches.

With both clubs struggling for consistency, McKenna could find himself in an interesting position if either job becomes available.

McKenna is waiting for the right Premier League opportunity

McKenna has already built a strong reputation in English football despite being only 40.

His biggest success came at Ipswich, where he guided the club through three promotions and helped take them from League One into the Premier League.

His work at Portman Road made him one of the most respected young managers in the English game, and his previous connections with Manchester United and Tottenham make both clubs particularly relevant to his future.

McKenna previously worked within Manchester United’s coaching setup before taking the Ipswich job. He also has experience at Tottenham, making the two clubs familiar territory for him.

His Ipswich record also shows the scale of the job he took on.

McKenna is not believed to be desperate to take the next job that becomes available.

Instead, Football FanCast reports that he is comfortable waiting for a project which suits him, rather than accepting a role simply to return to the touchline.

The situation at United has become particularly interesting after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Matheus Cunha scored a late equaliser to rescue a point for Carrick’s side, but United’s performance was again questioned. Reuters reported that United had 29 attempts on goal compared with Fulham’s 12, yet Carrick’s side struggled for urgency during important periods of the match.

Gary Neville was especially critical of United’s performance without the ball, while fresh physical data showed the club sitting at the bottom of the Premier League for several high-intensity running and sprinting measures.

That has naturally increased the attention on Carrick.

However, it is important to stress that Carrick is not currently expected to be removed during the international break.

Tottenham and Man Utd could create a huge opportunity

Tottenham’s situation is also attracting plenty of attention.

De Zerbi’s team suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa despite starting the match strongly, leaving Spurs with only two points from their opening five league games.

The Italian manager was openly unhappy with the performance and described his team as fragile and inconsistent.

That defeat has put further pressure on De Zerbi, although there is no indication that Tottenham have already decided to make a managerial change.

The next meeting between Tottenham and Manchester United could therefore carry plenty of extra attention.

That is where McKenna’s availability becomes particularly interesting.

Tottenham would also represent a major challenge, with De Zerbi currently trying to find consistency in a team which has struggled to turn promising periods into results.

The international break now gives both clubs some breathing room.
