Adam Lawrence wants Manchester United U21s to build on their winning league start against Nottingham Forest tonight, while keeping the players’ route towards the first team at the centre of his work.
United’s Premier League 2 fixture at Loughborough University kicks off at 7pm BST on Friday, with live coverage on MUTV. The club’s preview says Lawrence’s side are fourth in the table after taking maximum points from their opening three matches.

Manchester United U21s balance results and development
Speaking for an Academy-themed edition of the club’s Inside Carrington podcast, Lawrence explained why success at this level involves more than the league position. Although he wants his team to compete for trophies, he also wants individual players to keep progressing within a clear team style.
“We want to perform. We want to win the game. We understand the badge that we wear and what we represent,” he told United’s official website. “And we do have some really talented players.”
That competitive ambition sits alongside the challenge of a fluid age group, with the coach describing how he sets up his team to help individuals flourish. The Manchester United U21s schedule follows a midweek trip to Madrid for the Under-19s, another part of the Academy’s experience across different competitions.

First-team pathway remains the aim
Lawrence said United want to reach the latter stages of the tournaments they enter, but he returned to the bigger purpose of that work: “Ultimately, we need to put pressure on the first team, in terms of helping people progress through.”
The emphasis is on developing players who can take the next step, rather than treating team success and individual progress as competing aims. Friday’s game gives Manchester United U21s another chance to pursue both after their strong league start.
There is also a Nottingham Forest fixture for United’s Under-18s on Saturday. The club says that match now starts at 2pm BST and, because of the new kick-off time, cannot be shown live on MUTV.
