Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw have not travelled to Madrid and are not ready for Tuesday’s Atletico v Man Utd game, head coach Michael Carrick said at his press conference in the Spanish capital, as reported by United’s official team news. “They’ve not travelled, they both picked up issues in the game on Saturday and we were working through that,” he said. “At the moment, they are not ready for the game tomorrow.” Both had missed Monday’s training session, BBC Sport reported. Mainoo played the full 90 minutes against Spurs, while Shaw started and was substituted in injury-time.
Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Sesko are sidelined through injury, according to the club.
Matthijs de Ligt has travelled and is back in the squad for the first time since a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on 30 November 2025, United reported. Carrick said he is “definitely comfortable with him playing”, but that the timing and number of minutes are still being worked through. That is not confirmation of a place in the starting side. Young defender Dan Armer has also travelled.
For Atletico v Man Utd, Carrick also played down concerns over Bruno Fernandes’ fitness. In comments reported by the Manchester Evening News, he said the captain was “in good shape” and that his issue was “not a major deal”, although it was still there slightly. That is the manager’s assessment, not confirmation of Tuesday’s starting side.
Carlos Baleba made his first United appearance as a substitute against Spurs. Whether he starts remains open.

Atletico arrive on a winning run
Diego Simeone’s team have won four successive matches, according to United’s guide. They beat Deportivo Alaves away on Saturday with a late winner from Cristian Romero.
Ahead of Atletico v Man Utd, Atletico have 19 points from a possible 24 in La Liga. United’s guide says Simeone appears to have no injury concerns ahead of the meeting, with Pablo Barrios back in the starting side against Alaves.
Before this meeting, United beat Atletico 2-1 in a summer friendly in Stockholm, with Mbeumo scoring the winner. Their previous competitive meeting ended with Atletico winning 1-0 at Old Trafford in March 2022.
This is a different setting and a league-phase match. United will need to respond to the late setback against Spurs against opponents whose recent results have built momentum.
