Man United Edge Burnley 3-2: Mbeumo Magic Earns 9/10 but Four Flops Pile Pressure on Amorim

by Alex Matthews

Manchester United finally got their first win of the 2025/26 season as they beat Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford.

It was not easy, with mistakes at the back and wasted chances, but Bruno Fernandes held his nerve in injury time to score the winner from the penalty spot.

Manager Ruben Amorim made only one change from the Fulham game, with Diogo Dalot starting on the left.

United began strong and forced an own goal, but Burnley fought back. Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead again before more errors let the visitors equalise.

In the end, Amad Diallo won a penalty and Fernandes buried it.

Here are the player ratings from the dramatic match.

Altay Bayindir: 3/10

Another tough night for the keeper. He did not face much in the first half but still ended up conceding two goals in the second. His poor handling led straight to Burnley’s second equaliser. Pressure growing on him.

Leny Yoro: 6/10

The young defender looked calm and played a key pass that helped United score their second. Still learning, but showed promise.

Matthijs de Ligt: 5/10

Should be the leader at the back but was too quiet. Lost his man for Burnley’s first goal and never looked in control.

Luke Shaw: 5/10

Offered little going forward and didn’t give much support in attack. United missed Martinez badly.

Diogo Dalot: 6/10

Not strong enough in defence for Burnley’s first goal. However, he set up Mbeumo’s strike with a good cut-back.

Amad Diallo: 7/10

Lively performance. Missed a big chance before half-time but kept pushing. Won the penalty in stoppage time that gave United the victory.

Casemiro: 5/10

Struggled to control the midfield. His header led to the first goal but overall looked slow and off the pace.

Bruno Fernandes: 7/10

Worked hard all game and stayed calm from the spot to win it late. Big redemption after his Fulham penalty miss.

Mason Mount: 7/10

Looked sharp in the first half. Created openings and almost scored himself with a header. Taken off at half-time, possibly injured.

Bryan Mbeumo: 9/10

United’s best attacker. Constant threat with his pace and movement. Scored to put United ahead again and was involved in most chances.

Matheus Cunha: 7/10

Bright before going off injured. His hamstring problem could be a big blow for United.

Substitutes

Joshua Zirkzee: 4/10

Poor touches and missed a chance to score.

Kobbie Mainoo: 5/10

Did not look his usual self. Shot over a couple of times but worked hard late on.

Benjamin Sesko: 6/10

Came close with a header but could not find the target.

Noussair Mazraoui: N/A

Too late to make an impact.

Final Word

It was not pretty, but United finally have their first win of the season. The defence remains shaky, and Bayindir is under big pressure.

But fans will remember Bruno Fernandes’ late penalty that sealed a dramatic victory at Old Trafford.
