Mercedes Chief Toto Wolff Considered Man Utd Takeover Role Before Eyeing £450m Deal Involving Rory McIlroy

Fresh details have come out about earlier talks involving Toto Wolff and Sir Jim Ratcliffe regarding a possible role in the ownership of Manchester United.

The Mercedes Formula One chief once discussed the idea of joining Ratcliffe in a bid connected to the Premier League club.

However, while Ratcliffe later completed his investment in the Red Devils, Wolff has now shifted his focus towards a different high-value project in Formula One.

The Austrian businessman remains one of the most powerful figures in motorsport, and his interest in future investment opportunities continues to attract attention across the sporting world.

Wolff once considered joining Ratcliffe at Manchester United

Back in 2023, Toto Wolff admitted that he had spoken with Sir Jim Ratcliffe about Manchester United and the possibility of becoming involved in the club’s ownership.

Ratcliffe, a lifelong United supporter and founder of the global chemicals company INEOS, had been working on plans to purchase a stake in the club from the Glazer family.

The deal was eventually confirmed on Christmas Eve that year, when Ratcliffe completed a minority takeover and took control of football operations at Old Trafford.

Although Wolff respected Ratcliffe’s ideas and values, he ultimately decided not to become part of the investment group.

Still, the Mercedes team principal made it clear that he admired both Ratcliffe and the competitive nature of the Premier League.

At the time, Wolff said he had a strong personal relationship with Ratcliffe and also worked closely with Mercedes-Benz chief executive Ola Källenius.

The trio was even jokingly called the “Three Amigos” because of their direct and practical way of doing business.

Wolff added that if he ever felt he could genuinely contribute to Manchester United’s future, he would consider the idea carefully.

Focus now shifts to new Formula One investment

While Manchester United was once a possible opportunity, Wolff’s attention is now moving back to the sport he knows best, Formula One.

Reports suggest the Mercedes boss is leading a group interested in buying a share in the Alpine Formula One team.

Alpine currently has investment backing from a private equity group called Otro Capital, which owns a significant minority stake in the team.

According to reports, that stake could be worth close to £450 million.

If Wolff’s group moves forward with a deal, it would represent another major financial development within Formula One, where teams and investors are increasingly competing for influence.

Interestingly, former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has also reportedly shown interest in the same shares, which could create competition between two well-known figures in the F1 paddock.

Sports stars among investors linked to Alpine

Another reason the Alpine investment story has gained attention is the list of high-profile sports stars connected to the project.

Several famous athletes were among the original investors linked to the private equity group involved with the team.

Those names include former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata and Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool.

Other sporting figures involved include boxing champion Anthony Joshua and world-class golfer Rory McIlroy.

Their involvement highlights how Formula One has become an attractive investment opportunity not just for business leaders, but also for global sports stars.

Ratcliffe is still shaping Manchester United’s future

While Wolff has moved his attention elsewhere, Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains heavily involved in Manchester United’s football operations.

Since taking control of sporting decisions at the club, he has already made several big changes behind the scenes.

These include the appointment of CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

When Ratcliffe first joined the club, Manchester United were struggling on the pitch and finished eighth in the Premier League.

The following season proved even more difficult, with the team ending the campaign down in 15th place.

However, the current season has brought signs of improvement. After 29 games, United sit third in the league table and are pushing strongly for qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

For supporters at Old Trafford, that progress will be seen as an encouraging step forward after several difficult years.

United remains a huge attraction for global investors

Even though Toto Wolff did not join the Manchester United ownership project, the discussions between him and Ratcliffe show how attractive the club remains to major investors.

Manchester United continues to be one of the most valuable football clubs in the world, with global supporters and enormous commercial power.

For figures like Wolff, opportunities in football and motorsport can both offer major business potential.

Whether through Formula One or the Premier League, the connection between sport and big investment continues to grow stronger.
