United’s £80m Flop Could Now Bring Club Surprise £20m Jackpot

by Alex Matthews

Manchester United have finally closed the chapter on Antony, but the story is not over yet.

The Brazilian winger joined Real Betis on deadline day in a deal worth £21.7 million. After months of trying to move him on, United accepted the offer.

But hidden in the contract is a clever clause. United agreed a 50% sell-on deal, meaning if Betis sell Antony later for a big fee, United will pocket half of that money.

This could mean another £20 million or more heading back to Old Trafford if Antony shines in Spain.

United Cut Their Losses

Antony came to Manchester United in 2022 for a huge £81 million move from Ajax. But things never worked out. In 96 games, he only scored 12 goals and added five assists.

Fans grew frustrated, and new boss Ruben Amorim made it clear Antony was not in his plans.

Former Manchester City adviser Stefan Borson called the deal “awful” on first look.

He said selling a player bought for more than £78 million for just £21.7 million looks bad on paper. But he also admitted the sell-on clause makes it a lot less painful.

As Borson explained, if Betis later sell Antony for something like £43 million, United will get another £21 million.

If that happens, the total money United make could almost match what Betis paid in the first place.

Why the Clause is Smart

United have been stung in the past with expensive signings who left for almost nothing.

Fans remember players like Raheem Sterling’s Chelsea struggles or Kalvin Phillips’ fall at Man City, where value dropped to near zero.

With Antony, United at least secured cash upfront and a chance at more later.

If he fails in Spain, they still got £21.7 million for a player Amorim did not want. If he succeeds, they cash in again.

It is a gamble, but a smart one.

Eriksen Future Still Unclear

In other news, Christian Eriksen could also find a new club soon.

The midfielder was released by United in July and has been training with Malmo in Sweden to keep fit.

Reports say Premier League and Championship clubs are watching closely and could make a move.

Antony’s move to Betis feels like a failed transfer for United, but the sell-on clause gives the deal hope.

Instead of losing everything, United may still profit if Antony’s career takes off again.

For now, fans will watch closely to see if the Brazilian can shine in Spain and possibly earn United millions more.
