United Lay Down Harsh Terms: £190k-a-Week Star Can Stay But Only If He Agrees To A Major Sacrifice

by Alex Matthews

Manchester United have made a big call on Harry Maguire’s future, and it could go either way for the England defender. The club are happy to keep him beyond this season but only if he agrees to slash his wages.

The 32-year-old joined United from Leicester City back in 2019 for a huge £80 million, becoming the world’s most expensive defender at the time. Since then, his time at Old Trafford has been full of ups and downs. He’s had great moments in red, but also faced harsh criticism and mockery from rival fans.

Maguire’s Revival Under Amorim

Things started to look up again when Ruben Amorim arrived at Manchester United. The Portuguese boss changed the system to three at the back, a move that seemed to suit Maguire perfectly. His form improved, and the club even extended his deal last January until June 2026.

Fans began to see flashes of the old Maguire, strong in the air, composed on the ball, and vocal at the back. But despite that progress, things have changed again this season.

Amorim now prefers a new-look defence featuring Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Luke Shaw. That has left Maguire fighting for his place, with only two Premier League starts so far this term.

United Want Him To Stay, On Their Terms

According to fresh reports, United’s new owners INEOS are open to keeping Maguire around next season — but on a smaller wage. Right now, he earns around £190,000 a week, one of the highest salaries in the squad.

Sources suggest the club want to reduce that figure significantly as part of their wider plan to control spending and reshape the wage structure.

If Maguire accepts the new terms, he could stay on as a valuable squad player and leader, especially with United aiming for a return to European football.

But if he refuses, there’s growing talk of a move to Saudi Arabia, with clubs ready to offer him big money and a fresh start.

Tough Decision Ahead

It’s a tough call for Maguire, stay at Old Trafford with a pay cut, or leave for a new challenge abroad.

Many fans still respect his commitment and leadership, even when things have gone wrong. He’s one of the few experienced defenders in the squad, and Amorim knows that having him around could be vital in a long season.

Whatever happens, the next few months will decide Maguire’s fate. United want to move forward, and Maguire must now choose whether to move with them or walk away from the club he’s called home for six years.
